Virginia Glasmacher is a painter who „thinks“ in color and light. The perception and experience of nature are her points of departure, from which she creates images which can be perceived as color-landscapes or painting-landscapes. These images transport their own independent reality. For her, embracing abstraction does not mean a departure from the representational world. At times one seems to recognize a horizon, a reflecting water surface, cliff formations, general elements of landscape. Yet the viewer’s eye is always brought back to the surface, is drawn to patches of color or brushstrokes.
Her compositions open into several pictorial layers offering an open pictorial space and depth. She examines the relationship of the structures and materials (pigments, binders, paint brush/squeegee) and questions how they define the structure, rhythm and dynamism of the narrative of the image. The element of chance plays an important part in the creative process. She precisely weighs up where she intervenes and where she lets the materiality of color take over the defining role in the narrative. The titles of her works often suggest a connotation of landscape while at the same time naming the main color hues used in the painting.
Virginia Glasmacher received a B.A. in Visual Arts-Semiotics at Brown University, Providence, R.I. and completed further studies at New York University and the International Fine Arts Summer-Academy, Salzburg. Her work has been shown at art fairs including Art Basel, Art Cologne, Cologne Fine Art and Art Karlsruhe and is included in public and private collections throughout Germany and abroad.
